COUNTY NOTESOPEN TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS BLACKPOOL SPORTS CENTRE 2nd & 3rd October 2004 See Photo gallery for some pictures of the event There was another successful weekend for the officials of the Blackpool Table Tennis Club when they hosted the Stiga Blackpool Junior 4 Star Open Table Tennis Championships at Blackpool Sports Centre. The tournament had attracted a large entry from all over the UK including a good number of the top junior players in both the boys and girls events. England No.1 Paul Drinkhall from Cleveland headed the boys list and duly reached the final of the junior boy’s singles with a 3 games to 1 victory over last year’s winner Bradley Evans from Nottingham. The main challenger, Darius Knight from London, accounted for Lancashire hope Adam Bleakley in the other semi in straight games. All eyes were on 11 year old Gavin Evans from Nottingham who was seeded 4 in this under 18 event. He had overtaken his older brother Bradley on the national ranking list but succumbed to him in their quarter final match which was a 5 set marathon. In the final Drinkhall was a comfortable winner over Knight by 3 sets to 1, a reversal of the previous day’s cadet final. Warwickshire’s Kelly Sibley, the top seed in the junior girl’s event, had little difficulty in defeating no.2 seed Abigail Embling from Essex. Although she dropped the second end she won the next two in great style. Results:- Junior Boys Singles: P. Drinkhall bt D. Knight 9, -7, 6, 7.
